Which Weed Gel Do I Need?
Cut’n’Paste Herbicide Gels
With Cut’n’Paste products, say bye-bye to a wide range of persistent shrub and tree weeds such as: Wooly Nightshade, Ivy, Willows, Lantana, Ginger, Convulvulus, Boneseed, Boxthorn, Thistles, Inkweed, Kikuyu, etc. wherever you might find them – in bush reserves, riparian plantings, rockeries, your rose garden, conservation projects, and beyond.
Every home and garden needs Cut’n’Paste Weed Gels! Our Original gel use only 1% APG surfactants which have extremely low toxicity to animals. MetGel, Picloram, Bamboo Buster, and Glimax have no surfactants at all and negligible toxicity to soil organisms.
Most leafy weeds are easily treated by smearing Cut’n’Paste Original by holding the leaf flat on your palm. You can also simply use the brush to smear onto stems as you see in the photo to the right.
All the other weeds, that have strong stems, are treated by making a level flat cut near the ground and immediately applying a good 3mm layer of one of our other four gels.
But which herbicide weed gel do you need?

How To Choose The Right Weed Gel
There are three basic steps, which we explore in depth:
- Identify the weed
- Match the weed to the right weed gel
- Purchase the gel, apply and see the results
Step 1: Identify The Weed
You have to know the weeds, and weed type you’re targeting. Take a look at the images below (or check our Weed Directory) to see if you can match your weed. Once you know the weed type, remember its name and move to step 2.
Step 2: Match The Weed To The Right Weed Gel
Match your selected weed to the correct weed killer by looking at the weed-table below. Make a note of the product then move to step 3.
Step 3: Purchase, Apply and Relax
Purchase the recommended product in our online shop. Once you have your product, follow the instructions for use, then admire and reflect on how easy that was. Why not take the rest of the day for yourself?! 🙂

What to look out For
Step 1: Identify The Weeds
Once you have identified the weed you want to treat, scroll down to section two “weed table” , to see which Gel is recommended.
Step 2: Weeds, Weed Gels & How To Use Instructions
The following table covers most categories of weeds. For advice on specific weeds please email us
(Note. Our Glyphosate Gels will not harm plants next to them. Always choose these gels in the first instance. The Picloram and MetGel should only be used when there are no valued or native plants nearby as they can travel through soil and remain in the soil for up to 6 months.
| Which Weed? | Which Gel? | How do I do it? |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese privet, Rhamnus, Barberry, Hawthorn and most woody plants | Bamboo Buster or Picloram for stumps. Original if applying to the leaves of very small plants | Cut the shrub or tree close to the ground and paste the whole area of the stump and especially the outside perimeter. Paste any exposed roots after scraping off the bark. When the stem or truck of the shrub or tree is small, less than 1cm, paste the underside of a couple of the top leaves rather than cutting the stem. |
| Gorse | Bamboo Buster or Picloram Gel | Cut and paste the main stems as close to the ground as possible and also paste any small shoots below the cut. |
| Willows, Yucca and and other weeds that grow readily from cuttings | Bamboo Buster on both of the cut ends. | The end of the cutting must also be pasted or it will re-sprout in contact with the ground if dropped. If putting the cuttings on the compost apply paste to the cut ends to prevent re-growth. |
| Bamboo species. There are over a 1000 species of bamboo | Bamboo Buster of course | Bamboos are particularly hardy. Use Bamboo Buster. See Bamboo Buster product for specific instructions. Paste Immediately after cutting. |
| Convolvulus, Thistles, Inkweed, Boneseed, dandelions and other herbaceous plants. | Original | Simply paste the underside of the top, youngest 2 or 3 leaves. Take care to avoid pasting leaves that overhang desirable plants in case of run off. Use your own experience and judgement as to how many leaves to paste depending on the size of the plant. |
| Agapanthus. Takes quite some time to die off | For small clumps Bamboo Buster is effective. For more extensive clumps use MetGel | With small agapanthus plants, a bean sized blob of the gel is best placed in the very centre of the growing point for new leaves or pasting some of the underside of the young leaves. Where clumps are very large and dense, a large number of the growing centres will need to be cut and pasted with MetGel. |
| Kikuyu, Couch, Paspalum, Climbing Asparagus. | Original | For grasses and other flimsy plants apply the gel using a rubber glove to wipe a thin smear up the leaves near the growing tip. |
| Jasmine. Morning Glory. | Bamboo Buster or MetGel | For plants with long spindly runners, gather together the largest bunch you can of runners and tie off with two ties. Cut the bunch between the two ties and generously paste the cut ends on both side of the cut. |
| Japanese honeysuckle, Old Man’s Beard, English Ivy, Vines and all other large vines | Glimax Professional | For plants with single vines. Cut about 4 inches from the ground and paste the bottom end and wipe gel down the scraped stem to the ground so that the stem will also absorb the gel. If you can’t find the end that goes to the ground just paste the scraped exposed stems for 4 – 6 inches. |
| Ginger, and other plants with Rhizomes or Bulbs, like Arum Lily | MetGel. If you are close to a water course use Bamboo Buster | Expose the rhizomes or bulbs and cut through near the ground and liberally apply the gel |
| Moth plant | MetGel. | Cut and paste the stems if no pods are present, or if pods are present, scape off some of the bark and apply to the wounded stem as the viability of developing pods can also be severely affected |
| Wooly Nightshade or Tobacco Weed | Picloram gel (or Bamboo Buster if natives are close by) | Cut close to the ground and paste the exposed tissue immediately. Don’t use MetGel as it’s ineffective on the Solanaceae family of plants |
If you need specific advice on a particular weed that you are unable to identify, please take a photo of it and contact us to send a photo so that we can help recommend a course of action.
